02 AugBrugge

Our hotel in Brugge is swaaaannnk! Loving the luxury for the last few nights. Brugge is as I remember – full of canals, cobblestone streets, castle-like buildings, horses and chocolates. Much busier in the summer though!

We spent today walking around, enjoying a picnic in a park by one of the canals, and then taking a lovely canal tour. Oh and we also bought about 100€ worth of chocolate… Oups!

Finished off the trip with a horse drawn carriage ride around Brugge- I totally felt like a princess it was great. :)

01 AugAntwerp

Ahhh how I loved our time in Antwerp! I guess I didn’t know what to expect – it very pleasantly surprised me! The city of Antwerp is very large – but the streets are centered around the pedestrians so even though there are lots of people – there is plenty of room for everyone to be walking around. It has the old Europe feel with lots of monuments, cathedrals, and cafe/restaurants everywhere. I love how so many people here spend most of their nights on a patio somewhere in the city just to enjoy a drink, the warmth of the sun, good people, and being in the midst of one of the giant cathedrals.

People also love their dogs here. Dogs are allowed almost everywhere – shopping malls, stores, restaurants (mostly outdoor I think), trains, etc. I swear there is a cute furry creature every 5 meters – love! Can’t wait for our very own… :)

We stayed at hotel Matelotte. A very swank, modern boutique hotel in the center of the historic part with only 11 rooms. Very clean rooms, good shower and a comfortable bed. I very much enjoyed our stay here. The front desk was also extremely helpful – restaurants, taxis, and plenty of wonderful suggestions.

The first evening we went to a restaurant suggested by our hotel, Estro Armonico with Dave and Maia. It was fantastic! It was below ground level in what felt like caves that were candle lit. The one chef had a fire pit and a grill in the middle of the restaurant and this is where all the food magic happened. We had a salad to start – It had everything including apples, raisins and a delicious French onion like dressing. The bread assortment, warm from the fire grill, was continuous and served with delicious garlic butter. We enjoyed a filet mignon – cooked to perfection on the fire grill with a nice smokey flavor. This steak is in the running for the best meat I have ever had! Dinner was complete with a baked potato and a bottle of Cote du Rhone – Bouilly… I must have this wine again! We ended the night by strolling the cobblestone streets admiring all of what Antwerp has to offer.

Fun little tidbit – we kept noticing lone severed hands all over this city and there was an impressive statue of a man holding a severed hand about to throw it… Apparently the river Schelde that runs through Antwerp used to be protected by a Giant – and if you didn’t pay the toll for the river he would sever your hand. One day one of the Gods Brabo fought the giant and won – and severed his hand. The giant’s hand can be found on one of the main street here – it’s about 2-3 meters wide. Antwerp – Ant means hand and werp means to throw.

Sooo onto the event of Vacasean! The wedding. The ceremony was at 11am at St Carrolus Borromeus cathedral – so large that it was nicely located on our tourist map haha. It was huge! Complete with a gate-keeper like older man in a fancy cloak. Had a lovely courtyard we could hang out in before and after the ceremony. Steph looked absolutely beautiful! After the mass we enjoyed sangria in the courtyard with the other guests.

The reception was at 7pm at a place called De Ark. It’s a large idle boat with lots of windows looking out onto the water that has been modernized into a beautiful space. The evening started with a never-ending glass of champagne and hors d’oeuvres. The service was fantastic – I mean all night I never had to go to the bar – anything you wanted was either replenished right away or brought to you within 1 min. We even tested this theory that you couldn’t have an empty glass of wine hehe…
So the whole wedding theme was based on Tom and Steph’s travels and how they met in Thailand. The hors d’oeuvres consisted of cheese and ham croquettes, mini samosas, and prosciutto on a baguette with some basil and parmigianno. We were given luggage tags with our name on it and a city – the location of our table. We sat at the Gent table with some great people – guy from Ireland (who was hilariously referring to lucky charms the entire evening….), ladies who met Tom and Steph in Thailand, Maia and Dave, and even Colin from Bathurst who I didn’t realize was there until we sat at the table… Too funny. :)

The couple and wedding party were introduced into the room by all the guests standing on their chairs waving our cloth napkins in the air, cheering and rocking out to some Franz Ferdinand! So much fun!

The buffet consisted of 3 tables with 3 dishes each. Canadian – sliders, potato wedges and Caesar salad. Asian – pad thai with prawns, green curry and rice, and a tofu noodle dish. Belgian – tomatoes stuffed with mini shrimp, potato balls, and Steph’s grandmothers amazing ham rolls in a white sauce!
The cake came with sparklers, a traditional Belgium song and again guests on their chairs waving napkins in the air. Awesome!!! This was a great way to build up our dessert appetite.
Dessert… Ok Tom and Steph are awesome at weddings. It was a dessert buffet that included rice pudding, fruit tarts, cake, chocolate mousse, creme brûlée, cinnamon ice cream, apple pie, belgian white mousse (?), and more! When I passed by the cinnamon ice cream I had originally politely refused since I was too full, but the server looked at me and said threateningly “you’ll regret it” hahaha. So I had some and never looked back.

The dance part started at around midnight. No, I did not catch the bouquet. Hehehe… Good dj – mix of 80s, current, and even some rock. This sounds like a bad mixture but he made it work. We danced until 4am! It was just an incredible time and we are so happy for Tom and Steph and props to them for throwing such an amazing wedding party!

We went to a BBQ the next day at Steph’s parents house a little outside of the city. We were 13 in all – mostly the travelers and close friends. Great sunny day, large backyard and even Diesel (Tom and Steph’s black lab) joined us. Most people, rightfully so, were drinking water :P . Steph has a wonderful family and it was a great way to end our stay in Antwerp.

Today we had a lovely breakfast in the sunshine and Sean even picked up a great new pair of shades on the way to the train station. Onward to Brugge! <3

28 JulBacharach

I am so happy that I decided to return here! Definitely much better the second time around with more time and $ :) .

We started yesterday with a beautiful train ride alone the Rhine river. Once we arrived we were just stunned as it feels like Cinque Terre in Italy but in Germany hehe. It’s so, so charming!

The streets (all 2 of them) of Bacharach are cobblestone, the houses/buildings are all old school German – painted, lots of flowers, and the village sits below the Stahleck castle. Really?! I know!!!

Our hotel, the Kranenturm, is more like a half castle half B&B. Kurt, the husband and owner, is the chef and Fatima, the wife owner is the most lovely hostess. We have a Rhine view and couldn’t have asked for better hospitality!

We ate at the Post Hof for dinner – I enjoyed a bratwurst with sauerkraut, mashed potatoes and a delicious herbed sauce that I can’t quite pick out the flavor – and Sean had the roast pork with potatoes and also a deliciously mysterious sauce. I tried the local Pinot Noir – the grapes grow on the sides of the steep hills here in Bacharach! The outside tables were sort of in a courtyard under a very famous church-like tower that dates back to the 10th century. When the bill came and I asked if they took Visa – the waiter who spoke very little if any English and all night was quite serious but very polite – cracked his first joke with “no Visa but we have lots of dishes” hahaha….

We woke up this morning to a lovely homemade breakfast. Next we took a boat to the village of Rudesheim – also so cute! The boat ride started with some rain but ended with sunshine, beer, a pretzel and castles everywhere.

Once we got back we walked up to the castle for a drink and to enjoy the view. Almost bought a wooden sword but instead chose a wine holder with “Vacasean 2011″ wood burned into it. The night was complete after a few lovely strolls and a delicious schnitzel dinner here at the restaurant hotel.

Oh PS we met Rick Steeves (as a group) while we were eating dinner! He is staying at the same hotel as us. We might get to talk to him more tomorrow at breakfast as he was super tired tonight. Seemed like a fun guy!

27 JulAmsterdam

On the way to Amsterdam from Ghent via train I saw a few miniature horses! I know this doesn’t sound like a logical way to start a blog post but we’re talking Amsterdam so I think anything goes. Anyways they were really short and cute and looked like real life my little ponies. I also started reading a David Bowie biography – appropriate for the journey ahead.

We got to Amsterdam no problem. It was about a 20 mins walk to our hotel. Unfortunately everything in Amsterdam is expensive – this means that for a lot of $ you get a hmm…. shit hotel. Well it was clean and had marble in the bathroom but that’s about it. I guess you have to remember that I’m coming from a 4 star Marriott in Ghent that served me cappuccinos everyday.
I didn’t get any cappuccinos served to me in Amsterdam. Haha…

Sean and I went to the Van Gogh museum in the afternoon. I didn’t get to see it last time I was in Amsterdam (I think due to a combination of less $ and other priorities… :P ). It was quite packed with people but ahhhhhh – absolutely loved it! Starry night was the only major work not shown. It really brought me back to when I was 15 trying to recreate Irises after seeing it at an expo in the Ottawa art gallery. The potato eaters was interesting to see – I can see why it kind of failed as his first major work. Oh and they had a complete section about the Bedroom restored – complete with a room staged as the painting – very cool! Props to the cafe in the museum – drinks and lovely full dinners for 20€ total.

We met Maia and Dave at our hotel shortly afterwards. We then all headed out on our own version of a walking tour around the city. Walked through the flower market, Dam square, towards Central station and then through the red light district. Still love seeing all the old hooks on the tops of the buildings that used to be used for hoisting furniture up the tall skinny buildings. Some of the buildings are even a bit tilted forward. We stopped for a drink at the Grasshopper patio on one of the canals. Everyone ordered a drink and then I tried to order a cappuccino – but subsequently got laughed at from all parties present including the waiter – so had to quickly switch to a cocktail. I was not disappointed with this decision… :)

More street browsing ensued and then we settled on another Grasshopper coffee shop located in a less crowded area. We enjoyed all the coffee shop had offer, picked up our favorite snacks and then walked back to the hotel as it started to rain. Fun times!

Less fun times were had at the train station this morning. We had to wait in a line to wait in another line to then wait for a train. The really friendly train service lady told us we have 4 connections to get to Bacharach, laughed and then said she hopes we don’t get lost and end up on the news. Hmmm so far so good?! Haha

I am now on one of the multiple trains to Bacharach. Back to my Bowie book and looking at all the cute miniature farm animals along the way.

27 JulGhent Day 3

We had a nice leisurely day today. Found a patio, or more like chose since there seems to be ~100 options for patios here, enjoyed some cappuccinos and a waffle for breakfast. Shortly after the stores were open we (I) did a bit of shopping in the land of 70% off! Because the new collection of clothing comes out August 1st I was able to shop at Mexx, Esprit and United Colors of Benetton – 3 items for a total of 35€!

For dinner we chose a recommendation out of our Lonely Planet – “Amadeus – the place for ribs”. We get there and the place is packed. I’m talking 30+ tables packed with waiters in suits and bow ties. Good sign so far! As we walk to our table we notice that there’s an awful lot of ribs on the tables – little did we know when we opened the menu the only option is ribs, hah. No problem – we can have ribs. So for 16€ you get unlimited ribs. Under 2 mins after we ordered – really we didn’t even have to order – a rack of ribs, baked potato with curry sauce and salad shows up. The sauce on the ribs was good but the ribs itself were not great – reinforced that my dad really does make the best ribs. About 5 mins into the meal waiters are showing up everywhere with trays of ribs and potatoes to replenish everyone’s plates. We couldn’t help but laugh every time we were offered something – haha – just picture instead of offering something like more bread – it’s full racks of ribs. All kinds of tables around us would keep taking more – 3, even 4 rounds of full racks! We were probably there for a a total of 25 mins – too funny.

We then finally found a rock cover band on one of the stages and enjoyed a few good rock and roll covers.

Amsterdam… One night only… Tomorrow!

25 JulGhent Day 2

I need to comment on the fact that every bar we have been to in Ghent so far has had almost a completely different list of beers. I even found one with fruit and ice in it! More like a beer-cocktail. Sean’s been rocking the 9.5% beers. He’s discovered that he just needs to order anything with “tripel” in the name.
We met Maia and Dave at the supposedly best fries place in Ghent. I know this because I made friends with the front desk guys late last night and got all kinds of good info. This is apparently the place where the locals go, and I even checked their credentials – they are both from Belgium. It was a little outside the main center, though still close enough. Tiny place called Gouden Sate. Owner was named Julien and he came equipped with a t-shirt that said Julien. Looked like a classic older man that really enjoys serving fries. I tried the Andalouse sauce instead of the traditional mayonnaise- and was pleasantly surprised. 1000 island type sauce with a kick and extra tang.

Went on a boat ride to tour the canals. Came with free ice cream. A bit difficult to understand the tour guide but pretty nonetheless.

Next up it was castle time! We climbed and toured an 12th century castle (Castle of the counts) and got to see some torture devices. I felt it might be a bit too fate tempting to get a pic of one of our heads in the guillotine… “Canadian tourist loses head in freak accident…”

We also walked down a graffiti filled street and then enjoyed a lovely dinner on a patio. Dave and I shared some mussels – they were good since they tasted like they have been marinating for a while – but overpriced compared to home. 20€ for ~3 lbs! They came in a really cute pot and fries so I was sold.

After dinner we ran into Tom, Steph, Tk, Anette and one of Steph’s friends. Nice to see everyone again – and we’re all getting very excited for the big wedding in Antwerp!

We are in Ghent for 2 more nights. Ghent really only needs a total of 2 night to be enjoyed thoroughly – but I’m sure we will find something fun to do tomorrow. The shops will be open and it’s solden season! I love a good solden followed by some drankens. :D

Ps. Sean has posts at season.net.net.

24 JulGhent Day 1

23 JulThe Arrival

We have arrived in Brussels! Steph and her sister Charlotte greeted us when we came off the plane and had “Welcome to Belgium” bags for us filled with maps, info and other goodies. So much fun to be greeted by someone you know AND get a cute welcome bag!

Hotel was about 50 meters from the baggage pick up area – so nice!

We’re on our way to Ghent via an hour train ride. Only 22€ for the both of us. Yes!

22 JulAn All-Nighter and a Very Blue Lagoon

These Iceland Air people are quite efficient. We boarded the plane from Halifax and as soon as we sat down the flight attendant announced that we would be leaving in 2 mins. 2 mins! And then we did. The captain half jokingly half seriously said we were waiting for 2 stragglers and that method seemed to work. We arrived in Iceland at 2am Halifax time/5am Iceland time. Sleep was minimal. We are all a bit zombie like today but that’s ok!

From the Iceland airport we decided to use our 12 hour layover to go on an Icelandic excursion to the Blue Lagoon. We were on the first shuttle over at 7:30am. The actual lagoon didn’t open until 9am so we indulged in the brunch buffet in a grand room with views of the lagoon. The building resembles a modern spa complete with plastic bracelets that have a computer chip capable of opening and closing your locker, getting you access to the lagoon, and even allows you to order drinks at the bar in the lagoon! Win!

The lagoon itself was beautiful. A big land space of nothing except volcanic rock covered in moss that leads up to large natural ponds of warm, sometimes quite hot, pools of sky blue water. Just beautiful!

Other attendees – sometimes not so beautiful. :P

Highlights include a steam bath, waterfall powerful enough to give a bit of a massage, arriving early enough to beat the crowds at least for a little while and a cocktail available at 10am that was blue mimicking the lagoon. Yes!

Even after this excursion that was 30 mins from the airport, we still ended up having 3 hours to kill before our connection. Too long! It wastes a whole day of travel – I won’t be choosing this option next time around.

We are now on the last leg of the flight to Brussels. Hooray for the Sheraton airport hotel that we will walk directly into from the baggage claim and also the emergency exit extra legroom seats we scored. Someone didn’t show up so Tom even got to join us!

There is talk of jäger. I must go now!
